Abstract. How old is Oxford University? Although younger than the oldest European universities (Bologna and Paris), it can still trace its existence back through 800 years. In this talk I survey these eight centuries of mathematical activity, from medieval Oxford to recent times, from the world of Roger Bacon and Richard of Wallingford to that of Sir Roger Penrose and Sir Andrew Wiles.
