An invitation to random matrix theory

Michael Stolz

Random matrices have been studied by physicists since the 1950s. In mathematics, there has been an upsurge of interest during the past decade, which is in part due to the fact that deep connections between random matrices and fields such as combinatorics, number theory and operator algebras have been gradually emerging. In this talk, I will survey these developments on a rather nontechnical level, but will try to make them somewhat more rigorous in the case of combinatorics.
