The design of new car models is often based on a mathematical modeling and optimization. Already in an early phase of the development, the reduction of noise emissions or the increase of fuel efficiency is based on computer models. This leads to major challenges for the mathematical modelling, as well as the development of appropriate simulation, control and optimization methods which are far from being settled.

We present the necessary mathematics for these tasks and demonstrate several drawbacks of current approaches for model based control and optimization. These lead to interesting algebraic and analytic mathematical problems and we discuss several new results in this context, including a new maximum principle for systems of differential-algebraic equations.
