Televised poker tournaments, especially Texas Hold'Em tournaments, have led to an incredible resurgance in the popularity of poker in North America and other parts of the world. Mathematics plays an interesting role in the game of poker, indeed, there are strong similarities with the role mathematics plays in examining industrial problems. In this talk we explore the interplay between mathematics and poker. The speaker has considerable experience in mathematical consulting in industry, and considerable experience in writing about the mathematics of poker. He had a regular column on mathematics and poker in Poker Digest during its five years of existence, and he now has a column on the same topic in the Canadian Poker Player. His website (http://www.math.sfu.ca/~alspach) is a primary source for this topic.
